Softball Recap: Sun Prairie West Takes a Loss

Sun Prairie West extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 7-10 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 7-6 heartbreaker at the hands of the Vel Phillips Memorial Spartans. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Spartans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 11-10 back in April.

Kaelynn Endres spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and six unearned) runs on seven hits.

On the hitting side, Audrey Davis was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. That triple was her first of the season. Brynn Borchert was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.

As for Vel Phillips Memorial, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games.

On Vel Phillips Memorial's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Emma Hammersley gave up four earned runs on six hits and racked up six Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Nev Seal, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Tricia Balice, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sun Prairie West will welcome Oregon at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Vel Phillips Memorial, they will take on Janesville Parker at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Vikings have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed eight runs per game on average), something the Spartans will no doubt try to take advantage of.
