After a string of four wins, the Shiprock Chieftains's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They were outmatched by Grants at home and fell 90-62. Despite running the score up even higher than they did last Tuesday (60), Shiprock still had to take the loss.
Loss or not, Shiprock got some senior leadership from Donte Nelson who scored 30 points and Nevaughn Begay who scored 19 points. Begay scored a full 30.6% of Shiprock's points, the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Shiprock's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 4-1. As for Grants, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-1.
Shiprock will head out on the road to face off against Durango at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Durango will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 106th in Colorado, while Shiprock is ranked 35th in New Mexico). Grants is on the road again on Friday and play against Shiprock at 1:30 p.m. on December 15th. Shiprock knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five matches -- so hopefully Grants likes a good challenge.
