Mercer County is a perfect 4-0 against Orion since May of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles will look to defend their home field against the Chargers at 4:30 p.m. Mercer County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.
Mercer County came out on top against West Prairie on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive seven-run fifth inning. The Golden Eagles blew past the Cyclones 12-2. That's two games straight that the Golden Eagles have won by exactly ten runs.
Elsie Cook made a splash while hitting and pitching. She tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Mercer County let Peyton Knapp and Jayden Weeks run wild. Knapp went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one triple, while Weeks went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. What's more, Weeks posted two RBI, the most she's had over her last 13 games. Kylie Weeks was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
Mercer County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in four consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for Orion's offense. They came up short against Sherrard on Monday, falling 10-0. The Chargers have struggled against the Tigers recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost meeting.
Mercer County is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That somehow still isn't as good as their 16-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.5 runs over those games. As for Orion, their loss dropped their record down to 9-15.
Everything went Mercer County's way against Orion when the teams last played on April 10th, as Mercer County made off with a 6-0 win. Do the Golden Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Chargers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
