The Holgate Tigers won the last time they faced the Morenci Bulldogs, and things went their way on Friday too. Holgate came out on top against Morenci by a score of 30-22. Given Holgate's advantage in MaxPreps's football rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked second in Ohio, while Morenci is ranked 79th in Michigan), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Holgate to victory were Isaac Mendoza and Xavier Mccord. Mendoza gained 175 total yards and two touchdowns, while Mccord rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries. Mendoza was no stranger to the big play, cutting upfield for a catch that went for 63 yards.
When it comes to explaining why Morenci lost, one person who can't be blamed is Michael Rising. Despite the final result, he rushed for 119 yards.
Holgate's win was their fifth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 7-1. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-6 McKinley and 2-7 Stryker (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 33.1% over those games). As for Morenci, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-6.
Holgate will be playing in front of their home fans against St. Mary Central Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on October 28th. St. Mary Central Catholic will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. Morenci does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
