The Madison Mavericks's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their sixth straight loss. They lost to Johnson on the road by a decisive 62-44 margin. While losing is never fun, Madison can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 587th, while Johnson is ranked 203rd).
When it comes to explaining why Madison lost, one person who can't be blamed is Nadia Bailey. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 23 points and 11 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Sophia Perez, who scored seven points.
Johnson got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jera Salters out in front who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 14 rebounds. Salters has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last four times she's played. Taryn Johnson was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with seven assists and five steals.
Madison has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost 11 of their last 12 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 12-17 record this season. As for Johnson, they now have a winning record of 15-14.
Coincidentally, both teams will both be playing Churchill the next time they take the court. Madison will head out to face Churchill at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Johnson will host them at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
