The Mount Union Trojans are taking a road trip to square off against the Somerset Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Mount Union 3.4, Somerset 2.1) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Mount Union's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They had just enough and edged out Mifflin County 2-0. The victory was nothing new for the Trojans as they're now sitting on four straight.
The result came thanks to Davin Yocum's shutout, as he gave up just five hits. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Mount Union saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jamon Ranck, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one run. That's the most doubles Ranck has posted since back in May of 2024.
Meanwhile, Somerset came tearing into Friday's game with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Raiders 14-1. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 contests by six runs or more this season.
The team relied heavily on Cole Lucas, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and three RBI. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kahne Foltz, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.
Somerset always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .562. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bellefonte only posted an OBP of .318.
Somerset pushed their record up to 14-1 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.4 runs over those games. As for Mount Union, their record is now 13-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mount Union has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Somerset struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Mount Union came out on top in a nail-biter against Somerset in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, sneaking past 2-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Trojans since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
