The Gross Catholic Cougars will square off against the Arlington Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Gross Catholic is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Gross Catholic is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nebraska's top teams: Skutt Catholic, who was ranked fourth at the time (Gross Catholic was ranked 23rd). The Cougars came up short against the SkyHawks on Saturday, falling 13-0. The contest marked the first time this year in which the Cougars were not able to get on the board.
Gross Catholic saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Robbie Brennan, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases. Brennan is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.
Meanwhile, Arlington came into Saturday's match having lost eight straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They never let Louisville get on the board and left with a 10-0 win on Saturday. Considering the Eagles' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
The result came thanks to Jackson Stosich's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up eight Ks. He has become a key player for Arlington: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most two hits, but 4-12 otherwise.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Peyton Marfisi, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Arlington's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 2-12 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Luke Sharp, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Gross Catholic's loss dropped their record down to 13-7. As for Arlington, their victory bumped their record up to 6-13.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Gross Catholic has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Arlington struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Gross Catholic skirted past Arlington 4-3 in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
