Faith Baptist hasn't had much luck against Vasquez recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Contenders will challenge the Mustangs at 3:15 p.m. Faith Baptist will aim to continue their four-game streak of scoring more runs each matchup than the last.
Faith Baptist had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Desert Christian on Tuesday. The Contenders were the clear victors by a 15-5 margin over the Knights. Considering the Contenders have won three contests by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Keira Correos made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. Correos was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with four runs, five RBI, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Rayanna Larson was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2024. Opal Thomas also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Faith Baptist was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Vasquez was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-3 heartbreaker at the hands of Polytechnic. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Mustangs have suffered since April 10, 2024.
Sadie Mendoza was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Faith Nasrallah, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one double.
The victory got Faith Baptist back to even at 4-4-1. As for Vasquez, their loss dropped their record down to 12-11.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Faith Baptist has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Vasquez struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Faith Baptist couldn't quite finish off Vasquez in their previous matchup two weeks ago and fell 8-6. Can the Contenders avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
