Alexander Central might have lost, but man, Jayon Connor was a machine: he dropped a double-double on 22 points and ten rebounds. Connor's evening made it nine games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Garison Millsaps, who posted five points and nine boards.
Even though they lost, Alexander Central smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in four consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Ashe County managed to keep up with Watauga until halftime on Friday, but things quickly went downhill from there. Ashe County came up short against Watauga, falling 76-52. The Huskies have struggled against the Pioneers recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
Alexander Central will have to contain Cole Treva as he made an impact in Ashe County's last game. He went 10 of 19 on his way to 27 points. The dominant performance gave Treva a new career-high in points. Caleb Farias also deserves some recognition as he pulled down his first board of the season.
Ashe County's defeat dropped their record down to 6-10. As for Alexander Central, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-9.
Friday's game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Connor and Bryce Peters. Connor has been dynamite this season: he has averaged 26.8 points and 10.1 rebounds. For his part, Peters has averaged 14.1 points and 1.9 steals.
Everything came up roses for Alexander Central against Ashe County in their previous matchup on January 9th, as the squad secured a 69-32 victory. In that match, Alexander Central amassed a halftime lead of 37-15, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
