The Monte Vista Pirates entered their tilt with the Cotopaxi Pirates with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. Monte Vista strolled past Cotopaxi with points to spare on Saturday, taking the game 46-30. That's another feather in the cap for Monte Vista, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Monte Vista found their leader in underclassman Heysenny Beltran, who scored 12 points along with five steals. Beltran is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Zariah Archuleta was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with two steals.
Cotopaxi's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Abby Fieth, who scored 12 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Fieth is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kelsey Teter, who scored five points along with two steals.
Monte Vista pushed their record up to 9-1 with that victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. As for Cotopaxi, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-4.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Monte Vista's homestand continues as they prepare to take on Custer County at 5:00 p.m. on February 2nd. Custer County comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 13 points in their last three games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse. As for Cotopaxi, Cotopaxi and Sargent will face off at 4:00 p.m. on February 2nd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Sargent knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past seven contests -- so hopefully Cotopaxi likes a good challenge.
