The Oberlin The Phoenix were the 71-47 winner over the Black River Pirates when they last played one another back in January of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The matchup between the pair wasn't particularly close, with Oberlin falling 70-55. They have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
When it comes to explaining why Oberlin lost on Monday, one person who can't be blamed is Isaiah Jones-Smith. Despite the final result, he scored 16 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Jones-Smith has scored all season. Korrie Freeman was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Oberlin bumped their record down to 1-10 with that defeat, which was their seventh straight on the road. As for Black River, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 2-12.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Oberlin won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Lake Ridge Academy at 7:30 p.m. on January 23rd. Lake Ridge Academy has now lost nine straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 2. As for Black River, they will head out on the road to take on Keystone at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
