The Windsor Jaguars will be taking part in a tournament against the Cardinal Newman Cardinals at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Windsor comes in on five and Cardinal Newman on 11.
While Windsor's victory against Maria Carrillo wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Jaguars skirted past the Pumas 14-13. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Jaguars have posted since April 11th.
The team relied heavily on Haley Homan, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Alyssa Rivers, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Windsor kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in five consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Cardinal Newman challenged Rancho Cotate on Tuesday. The Cardinals never let the Cougars get on the board and left with a 12-0 victory. The Cardinals might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 matches by seven runs or more this season.
Callie Howard made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one run.
In other batting news, Jordyn Johnsen was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. What's more, she posted two doubles, the most she's had since back in April. Andrea Mansbery was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.
Windsor's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-5. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.8 runs over those games. As for Cardinal Newman, their record is now 18-6.
Thursday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Windsor has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .453. However, it's not like Cardinal Newman struggles in that department as they've averaged .439. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Windsor might still be hurting after the 8-1 loss they got from Cardinal Newman in their previous meeting two weeks ago. Can the Jaguars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
