The Karns City Gremlins will venture away from home to take on the Lakeview Sailors at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. Karns City is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Things were looking good for Karns City after they put the first run on the board on Thursday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Moniteau by a score of 3-1. Gremlins fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Warriors since on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Lakeview waltzed into their matchup on Wednesday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They beat the Devils by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 11-1. Considering the Sailors have won eight contests by more than nine runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Parker Montgomery was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Owen Dye looked comfortable as he struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). Those seven strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Garet Guthrie, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Leyton Zacherl, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.
Lakeview kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Lakeview's victory was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.3 runs over those games. As for Karns City, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-4 record this season.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Karns City has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Lakeview struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Karns City was able to grind out a solid victory over Lakeview when the teams last played back in April of 2022, winning 17-12. Will the Gremlins repeat their success, or do the Sailors have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
