Aurora is 8-1 against Monett since May of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Houn Dawgs will look to defend their home field against the Cubs at 4:00 p.m. Aurora is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Aurora beat Licking 7-4. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Houn Dawgs.
Max Holland made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March. He was also solid in the batter's box, earning one RBI, one run, and two stolen bases.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Memphis Mooneyham, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Casen Brown, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Meanwhile, Monett got themselves on the board against New Covenant Academy on Thursday, but New Covenant Academy never followed suit. They blew past the Warriors 10-0. The Cubs not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since April 21st (when they won 10-0).
Like Aurora, Monett also got a great game from a two-way player: Aidan Clapper. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Clapper is becoming a predictor of Monett's success: when he allows at most three hits the team is 4-1 (and 7-10 when he doesn't). Clapper was also big at the plate, earning two runs and four stolen bases.
In other pitching news, Carson Burtrum looked comfortable as he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Miles Young was excellent, going 1-for-3 with four RBI and two runs. Monett is undefeated when Young posts two or more runs, but 7-11 otherwise. Brayden Seitz was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs and one double.
Monett hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as New Covenant Academy struck out 11 times.
Monett's victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 11-11. As for Aurora, their win bumped their record up to 15-13.
Everything went Aurora's way against Monett in their previous meeting back in April, as Aurora made off with a 16-1 victory. Will the Houn Dawgs repeat their success, or do the Cubs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
