Last Saturday, Claremont was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 63-57 to West Covina.
Despite the loss, Claremont saw an underclassman step up: Jaden Cardenas dropped a double-double on 22 points and 11 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Hugo Montejo, who scored 16 points.
Meanwhile, Workman had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 19.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 69-45 margin over Norwalk. The result was nothing new for Workman, who have now won three matches by 24 points or more so far this season.
Workman's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Aaron Hernandez, who dropped a triple-double on 20 points, 10 assists, and 12 steals. That makes it nine consecutive games in which Hernandez has scored at least 25% of Workman's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Luis Saenz, who dropped a triple-double on 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 steals.
Claremont now has a losing record at 4-5. As for Workman, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Keep an eye on the arc in Monday's matchup: Claremont have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 5.3 threes per game. It's a different story for Workman, though, as they've been averaging only 3.8 per game. Given Claremont's sizeable advantage in that area, Workman will need to find a way to close that gap.
