The Mescalero Apache Chiefs will head out on the road to challenge the Mesilla Valley Christian School SonBlazers at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Mescalero Apache is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, Mescalero Apache came up short against Lordsburg and fell 9-6. The defeat continues a trend for the Chiefs in their meetings with the Mavericks: they've now lost three in a row.
Mescalero Apache got a big performance out of Nick Yuzos, who went 3-for-4 with one triple and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Yuzos, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mesilla Valley Christian School). Their pitcher stepped up to hand Capitan a 24-0 shutout on Tuesday. The win was nothing new for the SonBlazers as they're now sitting on four straight.
Jeremiah Sullivan was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases and one RBI.
In other batting news, Zach Beasley was a standout: he went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and four RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in May of 2024. Kobe Redfearn was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, five RBI, and three runs.
Mesilla Valley Christian School always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .696. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Mesilla Valley Christian School pushed their record up to 7-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.3 runs over those games. As for Mescalero Apache, their loss dropped their record down to 4-10.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mescalero Apache has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Mesilla Valley Christian School struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Mescalero Apache suffered a grim 20-0 defeat to Mesilla Valley Christian School in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can the Chiefs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
