Midway and Cape Fear are an even 3-3 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Midway Raiders will challenge the Cape Fear Colts at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Midway is coming into the match hot, having won their last four games.
Midway is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They were the clear victor by a 13-3 margin over South Lenoir on Tuesday.
Wyatt Herring spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on seven hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Wyatt Scott, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Wilson Mayo, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.
Scott wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Midway kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Cape Fear made easy work of Jack Britt on Tuesday and carried off an 8-1 win. The result was nothing new for the Colts, who have now won four contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Jack Britt's batters probably weren't too happy with Logan Rayburn, who pitched a no hitter and racked up nine Ks (he gave up a single walk). What's more, Rayburn gave up only zero hits, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2024.
At the plate, Cape Fear let Brycen Talley and Landon Underwood run wild. Talley scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3, while Underwood scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3. Talley is becoming a predictor of Cape Fear's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-4 when he doesn't). Jackson Rainey was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Cape Fear has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.5 runs over those games. Midway's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Midway has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Cape Fear struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Midway couldn't quite finish off Cape Fear in their previous matchup back in March of 2024 and fell 2-0. Can Midway avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
