The Canby Cougars's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They fell to South Albany 58-54. While losing is never fun, Canby can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Oregon basketball rankings (they are ranked 141st, while South Albany is ranked 45th).
Canby's loss came despite strong showings from Jack Brauckmiller and Trevin Slagle. Brauckmiller scored eight points along with 13 rebounds and three blocks, while Slagle scored 17 points. Those 13 rebounds set a new season-high mark for him. Dallas Michel was another key contributor, scoring 15 points.
Even though they lost, Canby were working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Canby has not been sharp recently, as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season. As for South Albany, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Canby will finish 2023 at home by hosting Oregon City at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Oregon City has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 358 points over their last six matchups. As for South Albany, they will stay at home for another game and welcome Central at 7:00 p.m. on January 2, 2024. Central and South Albany are at an even 5-5 over their past ten head-to-heads.
