Even though the Union Spartans have not done well against the Midway Raiders recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. Union walked away with a 44-36 victory over Midway. Given Union's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 96th, while Midway is ranked 367th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Ariyona Spearman was her usual excellent self, scoring 21 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 steals. The game was her fifth in a row with at least ten points. Centavia McKoy was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with 6 rebounds.
The victory was the third in a row for Union, bringing their record for this year to 4-1. Admittedly, the team didn't face the toughest opposition across those games, namely Midway, Jones, and Midway. As for Midway, their loss dropped their record down to 1-3.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Union will face off against Jones at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Jones focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Friday. As for Midway, they will head out on the road to face off against Spring Creek at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Spring Creek is coming into the contest hot, having won their last three games.
