The Neumann-Goretti Saints put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They walked away with a 76-64 win over Cathedral Prep. Given Neumann-Goretti's advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked first, while Cathedral Prep is ranked 195th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Neumann-Goretti had a senior duo take command as Khaafiq Myers scored 30 points along with nine rebounds and two steals and Larenzo Jerkins dropped a double-double on 23 points and 14 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Myers pulled down eight or more rebounds. Torrey Brooks Jr. was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with two steals.
Despite the loss, Cathedral Prep saw an underclassman step up: Nando Mirarchi scored 18 points along with nine rebounds. Mirarchi hasn't dropped below 15points for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Thompson, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and two blocks.
Neumann-Goretti's win bumped their record up to 9-0. As for Cathedral Prep, they have fallen quite a ways from their 24-4 record last season and are now at 3-7.
Neumann-Goretti won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Lincoln Park Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on January 6th. One thing working in Lincoln Park Performing Arts' favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season. Cathedral Prep won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Niagara Falls at 6:00 p.m. on January 6th. Niagara Falls is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road.
