Comeaux has gone 8-1 against St. Martinville recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Comeaux Spartans will head out on the road to square off against the St. Martinville Tigers at 5:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Having struggled with 30 defeats in a row dating back to last season, Comeaux turned things around against Gueydan on Tuesday. They were the clear victor by an 18-3 margin over the Bears. The Spartans' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Reese Boutte was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up three earned runs off three hits. Boutte was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
In other batting news, Mayson Picard and Kane Miller did most of the damage at the plate: Picard scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4, while Miller got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run. Byron Smith also deserves some recognition as he scored his first runs of the season.
Comeaux always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .703. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Gueydan only posted an OBP of .429.
Meanwhile, St. Martinville beat Berchmans Academy 10-5 on Wednesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Tigers.
Like Comeaux, St. Martinville also got a great game from a two-way player: Rylin Savoy. He pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Savoy was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ashlon Smith, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-2. Another player making a difference was Branson Chiasson, who scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Comeaux's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-6. As for St. Martinville, the win got them back to even at 5-5.
Friday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Comeaux has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .484. However, it's not like St. Martinville struggles in that department as they've averaged .473. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Comeaux's way against St. Martinville in their previous meeting back in March of 2023, as Comeaux made off with a 16-5 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Comeaux since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
