Baseball Game Preview: King City Mustangs vs. Seaside Spartans

The King City Mustangs will take on the Seaside Spartans at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (King City has four straight wins, Seaside has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Seaside's hitters are going to have their work cut out for them on Tuesday: King City hadn't allowed a single run the last three times they've hit the field. The Mustangs blew past Marina 15-0 on Thursday.

Joey Pina made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Pina was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of King City's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-10 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, JC Navarro was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Mateo Blair, who scored two runs.

King City always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .515 or higher in three consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for Seaside's offense. They lost 10-0 to Alisal back in March.

King City's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 4-10. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.7 runs over those games. As for Seaside, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-5.

Everything went King City's way against Seaside when the teams last played back in March of 2023, as King City made off with a 15-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
