The Grainger Grizzlies will square off against the Volunteer Falcons at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Grainger is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.3 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Grainger made easy work of Claiborne and carried off a 14-1 win. The victory continues a trend for the Grizzlies in their matchups with the Bulldogs: they've now won six in a row.
The team relied heavily on Amanda Kledzik, who went 2-for-4 with four runs and two stolen bases. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaylee Nickell, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.
Grainger always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .519. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Claiborne only posted an OBP of .278.
Meanwhile, Volunteer waltzed into their matchup on Tuesday with five straight wins... but they left with six. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-1 win over the Trailblazers. Surprisingly, this marked the Falcons' fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.
Addyson Fisher spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on one hit and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Volunteer's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Jayden Ford, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Volunteer pushed their record up to 17-3 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.6 runs over those games. As for Grainger, their win bumped their record up to 11-5.
Friday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Grainger has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .447. However, it's not like Volunteer struggles in that department as they've averaged .511. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Grainger might still be hurting after the 11-0 loss they got from Volunteer when the teams last played last Thursday. Will the Grizzlies have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
