The Alice Coyotes are taking a road trip to square off against the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Alice comes in on three and Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial on seven.
Alice gave up the first runs on Saturday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with a 9-4 win over Carroll.
Robert Ramirez made a splash while hitting and pitching. He pitched seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in February. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Landon Guerra was excellent, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. Maddex Carrillo was another key player, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.
Meanwhile, while Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial put up some runs on Saturday, the same can't be said for Ray. Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial was the clear victor by a 10-0 margin over Ray. Considering the Eagles have won eight contests by more than six runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Alice, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial also got a great game from a two-way player: Jordan Garza. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over six innings pitched. Garza has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Aaron Castillo, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That home run was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ryan Morgan, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in three consecutive matchups.
Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial's victory was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-2-1. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for Alice, the victory got them back to even at 10-10-1.
Alice might still be hurting after the 17-2 loss they got from Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial when the teams last played on March 5th. Can Alice avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
