The Willowbrook Warriors will head out on the road to square off against the Berwyn/Cicero Morton Mustangs at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Willowbrook is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
Willowbrook easily dispatched Proviso East on Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Warriors fell just short of Downers Grove South by a score of 8-6 on Monday. The Warriors have struggled against the Mustangs recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost matchup.
Liz Pettinger and Natalie Quigley stepped up to the plate in a big way. Pettinger went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Quigley went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one double. Another player making a difference was Allison Coppersmith, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Berwyn/Cicero Morton). They put the hurt on Proviso East with a sharp 14-1 win on Monday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.
Berwyn/Cicero Morton got a massive performance out of Brooklyn Torres, who went 2-for-4 with two triples, four RBI, and one run. Those four RBI gave Torres a new career-high. Abby Galvez was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Berwyn/Cicero Morton's win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-16. As for Willowbrook, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-13.
Berwyn/Cicero Morton's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Willowbrook hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .328. It's a different story for Berwyn/Cicero Morton, though, as they've only averaged .240. Will they be able to contain Willowbrook's hitters?
Everything went Willowbrook's way against Berwyn/Cicero Morton in their previous meeting two weeks ago, as Willowbrook made off with a 10-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Warriors since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
