On Saturday, the Mullen Mustangs faced the Cherokee Trail Cougars in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Mullen suffered a tough 61-40 loss at the hands of Cherokee Trail. Mullen has not had much luck with Cherokee Trail recently, as the team's come up short the last two times they've met.
Despite the loss, Mullen still got an impressive performance from Allison Schwertner, who scored 15 points along with 7 rebounds and 3 steals. The matchup was Schwertner's third in a row with at least ten points. Tatum Jones was another key contributor, scoring 8 points along with 6 rebounds.
Cherokee Trail got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Delainey Miller out in front who scored 22 points along with 5 rebounds. That makes it two consecutive games in which Miller has scored at least 25% of Cherokee Trail's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Madeline Gibbs, who scored 10 points along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Mullen's loss dropped their record down to 2-1. As for Cherokee Trail, the victory for they keeps them at an undefeated 4-0.
Mullen's road trip will continue as they head out to face Boulder at 5:00 p.m. on December 5th. Hopefully Boulder focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight on Thursday. As for Cherokee Trail, they will head out on the road to face off against Chaparral at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Chaparral focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Saturday.
