Basketball Recap: Jamo Turner Key Part of a Team Effort in Hawks Win

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Sunnyslope, Apollo was happy to have turned things around on Wednesday. They strolled past the Camelback Spartans with points to spare, taking the game 68-54. Given the Hawks' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 41st, while the Spartans are ranked 190th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Apollo's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jamo Turner led the charge by going 8 for 17 on his way to 23 points and five assists. The dominant performance gave Turner a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Cristian Acevedo, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 16 boards.

Turner wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Apollo was working as a unit and finished the game with 22 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Apollo is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season. As for Camelback, they dropped their record down to 2-8 with the defeat, which was their third straight at home.

Apollo will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Pinnacle at 7:00 p.m. on January 10, 2025. After both having extra time off, Camelback and Cibola will dust off their jerseys to square off against one another at 7:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025.
