Northeastern and Hagerstown are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Knights will face off against the Tigers at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Northeastern 4.1, Hagerstown 1.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Northeastern will roll into the contest after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs last Monday, then bounced right back against Cambridge City Lincoln on Friday. The Knights were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Golden Eagles. The Knights might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matches by ten runs or more this season.
Hailey Elsrod was a major factor no matter where she played. She tossed five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
In other batting news, Isabella Peed was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two triples, four RBI, and two runs. Those two triples gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Macey Oler, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Northeastern was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .467. They are a perfect 9-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Hagerstown had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They walked away with a 6-1 win over Centerville on Monday. Winning may never get old, but the Tigers sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
Rylan Young spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up nine Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Allison Stinson, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one stolen base.
Northeastern's victory bumped their record up to 10-7. As for Hagerstown, their win bumped their record up to 18-2.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Northeastern hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .360. However, it's not like Hagerstown struggles in that department as they've averaged .407. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Northeastern couldn't quite get it done against Hagerstown in their previous matchup two weeks ago as they fell 3-0. Can the Knights avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
