Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Dean Varrecchione of
La Salle Academy (Providence) is the 2022 MaxPreps Rhode Island High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior helped the Rams go 8-3 and claim their second Division I state championship since 2017.
Varrecchione passed for 2,031 yards and 28 touchdowns on the season. In the state title contest, he threw and ran for a touchdown to help La Salle knock off rival Bishop Hendricken 38-29, ending the Hawks' four-year reign as champ in Rhode Island's largest classification.
Headed to play for Robert Morris University next year, Varrecchione threw for 225 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-21 semifinal win over North Kingstown.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released January 10.
