The Beaufort Academy Eagles will take on the Coastal HomeSchool Hurricanes at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Beaufort Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Beaufort Academy is headed into Thursday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Tuesday. They lost 7-1 to Patrick Henry Academy. Having soared to a lofty 11 runs in the game before, the Eagles couldn't push the score so high this time.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Coastal HomeSchool). They blew past Step of Faith Christian Academy 17-1 on Tuesday. The Hurricanes might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by ten runs or more this season.
Gabe Smith made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Coastal HomeSchool is 5-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 2-5 otherwise. Smith was also big at the plate, getting no hits from his two at bats. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (four).
In other batting news, Troy DeVoe was a standout: he scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Coastal HomeSchool's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-6 when he doesn't). J.W. Castongia was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
Coastal HomeSchool hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in four consecutive contests.
Coastal HomeSchool has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. Beaufort Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 1-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Beaufort Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Coastal HomeSchool struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Beaufort Academy suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to Coastal HomeSchool in their previous matchup two weeks ago. Will Beaufort Academy have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other baseball content.
