One final sweep of the floor in a 63-48 final for the
Morgan Park Mustangs against Cahokia plunged them into school history, becoming the second team in school history to appear in a state playoffs since 1976 — well before any of the students and even some coaches were born.
Then on April 25, Morgan Park High School in the city of Chicago joined the ranks of those across the country being honored on the MaxPreps Basketball Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard. Sergeant First Class Michael Waites was proud to present head coach Nick Irvin and his team with the "Minuteman" trophy that represents not only the qualities of a great Army National Guard member, but also many of the same qualities the team displayed this season such as teamwork, determination, loyalty and dedication.
It was "all for one and one for all" as Irvin stepped to the microphone with his players all around him, excited for the honor. He gave a humble account of his players this season including
Billy Garrett, a 6-5 senior guard already committed to DePaul University and
Kyle Davis, a senior point guard committed to Dayton University in Ohio.
The team performed its best this year going 33-3 for the season and coach Irvin pointed out that many of those games "were against 4A schools", showing the true caliber of this championship team.
Congratulations to the Morgan Park Mustangs on a memorable season!
