Coronado hasn't had much luck against Pueblo Central recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Cougars will host the Wildcats at 6:30 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Coronado took a 31-point defeat the last time they faced off against Pueblo East, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cougars skirted past the Eagles 24-21. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cougars.
The match pitted two dominant signal callers against one another in Thomas Buckmiller and Dolphka Lewis. Buckmiller had a great game on Thursday and threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns while completing 83.3% of his passes. Meanwhile, Lewis was balling out in the loss, rushing for 194 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 12.1 yards per carry.
Meanwhile, after low-scoring totals in their previous three matchup, Pueblo Central brought some dynamite into their most recent game. They breezed past Sierra to the tune of 39-6 on Friday. The win continues a trend for the Wildcats in their matchups with the Stallions: they've now won seven in a row.
Coronado better keep an eye on Brody Renner. He was instrumental in Pueblo Central's win, rushing for 167 yards and three scores while picking up 7.6 yards per carry. Those 167 rushing yards gave Renner a new career-high.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Pueblo Central proved: they limited Sierra to a paltry 2.6 yards per carry. The Wildcats' run defense has been on the up-and-up: they allowed 3.33 yards per carry earlier this season, but they've only allowed 6.17 on average over their last five games.
Coronado's victory bumped their record up to 6-3. As for Pueblo Central, their win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 3-6.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Thursday's contest: Coronado has been excellent in the air this season, having averaged 303.2 passing yards per game. It's a different story for Pueblo Central, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 46.1 passing yards. How will they fare against such a dominant passing game?
Coronado was taken down by Pueblo Central 59-7 when the teams last played back in November of 2024. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Cougars were down 52-7.
