Mt. Vernon is 8-1 against Clever since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Mountaineers will venture away from home to square off against the Blue Jays at 5:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Mt. Vernon took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They blew past Strafford 11-1. The Mountaineers haven't had any issues with the Indians recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive victory against them.
Lilly Burk and Jocelyn Liss did most of the damage at the plate: Burk went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI, while Liss went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run. That's the most hits Burk has posted over her last nine contests. Another player making a difference was Cheyenne Bieber, who went 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Mt. Vernon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .556. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Strafford only posted an OBP of .211.
Meanwhile, Clever had already won two in a row and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Trojans a 14-0 shutout.
Clever let Autumn Thrasher and Savannah Cheney run wild. Thrasher went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Cheney went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double. That triple was Thrasher's first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Thompson, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Clever's win was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-4. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.9 runs on average over those games. As for Mt. Vernon, their record is now 24-6.
Tuesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mt. Vernon hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .386. However, it's not like Clever struggles in that department as they've averaged .390. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mt. Vernon was able to grind out a solid win over Clever in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, winning 12-9. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mountaineers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
