Coalfield AA recap Oct. 16, 2012
Bluefield extended the longest winning streak in Coalfield AA this week by beating WestSide, 54-14. The victory was the sixth in a row for the Beavers.
Independence and Liberty played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Independence eventually emerging with a 40-37 victory.
Webster County's dynamic duo of Jacob Thayer and Hunter Given proved tough for Greenbrier West to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Thayer threw for 131 yards and one touchdown and Given had 92 yards receiving. Caleb Hardway helped Webster County's passing attack out by catching one ball for 18 yards.
Coty Bishop made the biggest impact on defense this week as Wyoming East lost to Shady Spring. The 5-foot-11 defensive end pulled down one interception and recorded one fumble.
Aaron Griffith was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 50 yards on 10 carries as the Warriors fell to the Cavaliers. Teammate Jacob Summe added to the ground attack by rushing for 29 yards.
Webster County's Thayer and Given have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading Coalfield AA in both passing and receiving yards. Thayer has thrown for 764 yards this season, while Given, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 18 catches for 339 yards. Wyoming East's Summe leads the league in rushing yards with 1037.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Raiders take on Monroe. Liberty is in seventh place, while the Mavericks are in 12th place.
Greenbrier West made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 6,069 from 7,601. The improvement came about via a 38-7 victory over Steve Skidmore's team last week.
