If the Oak Grove Grizzlies were riding high off their 81-58 takedown of the Montgomery Central Timberwolves last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Oak Grove's rough 80-57 loss to the Blue Comets on Friday might stick with them for a while. While losing is never fun, Oak Grove can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 260th, while the Blue Comets are ranked 87th).
Oak Grove's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Max Hurt, who scored 11 points along with three steals. Another player making a difference was JB Shabazz, who scored ten points.
Oak Grove struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only three offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Jerquarius Stanback was his usual excellent self, almost dropping a triple-double on 22 points, nine assists, and nine steals for Asheboro. Stanback is crushing the block category: he's posted at least three every time he's taken the court this season. Elijah Woodle was another key contributor, scoring 17 points along with five assists.
Oak Grove has not been sharp recently as the team's lost six of their last eight contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-10 record this season. As for Asheboro, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 15-2.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Oak Grove will take on the Black Knights at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. North Davidson is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 66 points per game this season. As for Asheboro, they will head out on the road to face off against the Spartans at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Central Davidson is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
