After a string of four wins, the Lafayette Hornets's good fortune finally ran out on Monday. They fell just short of Taylor County by a score of 53-50. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Lafayette came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 175th, while Taylor County is ranked 528th).
Lafayette lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Amarie Fleming, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds. Fleming scored a full 42% of Lafayette's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Trevor Mares, who scored 17 points along with three steals.
Taylor County was led to victory by Louis Gaddy Jr. and Trayce Abercrombie. Gaddy Jr. dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Abercrombie scored 14 points along with three steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Abercrombie has scored at least 25% of Taylor County's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jock Price, who scored four points along with ten rebounds and four blocks.
Lafayette's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 4-2. As for Taylor County, their win ended a three-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lafayette will square off against Trenton at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. Taylor County won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Munroe at 7:30 p.m. on December 12th. Munroe will be looking to keep their three-game home win streak alive.
