Wheeler County is 1-7 against the Red Devils since November of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Wheeler County Bulldogs will head out on the road to challenge the Hawkinsville Red Devils at 3:00 p.m. Wheeler County is no doubt hoping to put an end to a ten-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.
Last Tuesday, Wheeler County had to suffer through a rough 66-26 loss at the hands of the Redskins. While losing is never fun, Wheeler County can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 490th, while the Redskins are ranked 96th).
Meanwhile, Hawkinsville's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their third straight defeat. They were outmatched by Treutlen on the road and fell 63-36. Hawkinsville was down 51-26 at the end of the third quarter, and things only got worse from there.
Despite their defeat, Hawkinsville saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Karia Nelson, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds, was perhaps the best of all.
Wheeler County's loss dropped their record down to 1-16. As for Hawkinsville, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-8 record this season.
Wheeler County couldn't quite finish off the Red Devils when the teams last played back in January and fell 44-42. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Hawkinsville's Makayla Edwards, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and six steals. Now that Wheeler County knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
