The Powell County Pirates are taking a road trip to square off against the Fleming County Panthers at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Powell County came out on top against Montgomery County on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run third inning. The Pirates blew past the Indians 9-3. The Pirates haven't had any issues with the Indians recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Lacy Dicken spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on four hits and racked up nine Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Drew Miller, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Dylan Carter, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Fleming County let Garrard County stack five runs on them in the seventh inning on Saturday but luckily Fleming County prevailed anyway. The Panthers came out on top against the Golden Lions by a score of 10-6. The high-scoring effort was just what the Panthers needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.
Jett Martin was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched four innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. He is becoming a predictor of Fleming County's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is undefeated (and 11-13 when he doesn't). Martin was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run and one double.
In other batting news, Preston Cropper and Tyler Dells did most of the damage at the plate: Cropper went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one run, while Dells went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That triple marked the first that Cropper has hit this season.
Fleming County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Powell County's record now sits at 10-16. As for Fleming County, the victory snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 14-13 record.
Powell County skirted past Fleming County 3-1 in their previous meeting back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
