After a string of five wins, the Mayfield Trojans's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They took a 48-41 hit to the loss column at the hands of Burges. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Mayfield came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked seventh in New Mexico, while Burges is ranked 172nd in Texas).
Mayfield lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Victoria Kirker, who scored eight points along with six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Ceanna Mckines, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
Jordyn Hernandez was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 30 points and 14 rebounds for Burges. That makes it 22 consecutive games in which Hernandez has scored at least 25% of Burges' points. Priscilla Diaz was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with five assists and three steals.
Mayfield's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 8-2. As for Burges, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten contests, which provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mayfield and Silver will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 2nd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Burges will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Canutillo at 7:30 p.m. on January 5th.
