Baseball Recap: Southwestern Sets Scoring Season-High Against Edinburgh

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Southwestern). They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the Edinburgh Lancers on Wednesday. With that victory, the Spartans brought their scoring average up to 6.5 runs per game.

Isaac Bunch made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out eight over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs. Southwestern is undefeated when Bunch posts two or more runs, but 3-4 otherwise.

In other batting news, Southwestern let James Oliver and Landon Drake run wild. Oliver went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI, while Drake went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most stolen bases Drake has posted since back in May of 2024. Kyle Beck also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Southwestern was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .391. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive contests.

Southwestern's win bumped their record up to 6-4. As for Edinburgh, their loss was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 3-13.

Looking ahead, Southwestern will take on Triton Central in a tournament on Saturday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Tigers have averaged an impressive 8.7 runs per game this season. As for Edinburgh, they will challenge Brown County at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Lancers are facing the Eagles at the right time seeing as the Eagles are stuck on an 11-game losing streak.
