The St. Johns Redskins waltzed into their match on Wednesday with four straight wins but they left with five. They walked away with a 47-39 victory over Round Valley. Given St. Johns' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 20th, while Round Valley is ranked 92nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Elli Otto was the offensive standout of the game as she scored 18 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Ellie Heap, who scored eight points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Round Valley lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Harli Haws, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds and five assists. Haws has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Brenli Haws, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
St. Johns is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 18-4 record this season. As for Round Valley, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-9.
St. Johns will head out on the road to face off against Phoenix Country Day at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Phoenix Country Day is on a six-game streak of home wins, St. Johns a five-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. Round Valley will take on Hopi at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
