The West Columbus Vikings will venture away from home to challenge the Ayden - Grifton Chargers at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
West Columbus is headed into the game having just posted their closest victory since March 11th on Wednesday. They won by a run and slipped past Pender 3-2. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Vikings.
West Columbus' win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Brennen Little, who went 1-for-3 with one double.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Ayden - Grifton). They blew past Roanoke Rapids 20-12 on Saturday. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Chargers, who until this contest were averaging 3.95 runs allowed.
Brysen Williams made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched 2.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. Williams was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-5 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jack Ewell, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Zach Jones, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs and two RBI.
Ayden - Grifton lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Ayden - Grifton is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season. As for West Columbus, their record now sits at 5-11.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. West Columbus has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Ayden - Grifton struggles in that department as they've been averaging 10.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
