The Hawthorne Hornets pushed their score all the way to 57 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 62-57 hit to the loss column at the hands of Mariner. Hawthorne has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Caleb Rollerson and Leland Johnson certainly did their best on Thursday to try and avoid the loss. Rollerson scored 15 points along with eight rebounds, while Johnson scored 19 points. That's the first time this season that Johnson scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyler Ingram, who scored seven points.
Mariner got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Marcus Kelley Jr out in front who scored 18 points along with six rebounds and five assists. The contest was Kelley Jr's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Asher Hercek, who scored 18 points along with eight rebounds.
Hawthorne's defeat dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Mariner, they now have a winning record of 8-7.
Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing North Marion the next time they take the court. Mariner will host North Marion at 1:47 p.m. on Friday, while Hawthorne will head out to face them at 1:47 p.m. on Saturday.
