Washburn is 9-1 against Roosevelt since December of 2018, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Monday. The Washburn Millers will head out on the road to face off against the Roosevelt Teddies at 7:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Washburn has five straight victories, Roosevelt has five straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Saturday, Washburn faced Breck in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Washburn skirted past Breck 66-64. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Meanwhile, Roosevelt pushed their score all the way to 59 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. Their tough 83-59 defeat to Robbinsdale Armstrong might stick with them for a while. While losing is never fun, Roosevelt can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Minnesota basketball rankings (they are ranked 232nd, while Robbinsdale Armstrong is ranked 44th).
Roosevelt's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Avery Wells, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 17 rebounds, and Calvin Peterson who scored 18 points along with two steals. Wells has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last four times he's played. Obie Esparza was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with five rebounds.
Washburn pushed their record up to 20-2 with that win, which was their seventh straight at home. As for Roosevelt, they now have a losing record at 9-10.
Everything came up roses for Washburn against Roosevelt in their previous meeting back in December of 2023 as the squad secured a 88-47 win. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Wells, who scored 24 points along with seven rebounds. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will Washburn still be able to contain Wells? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
