Roswell (N.M.) grabbed the lead when
Stephen Lucero ran for a touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter and held on to beat
Gadsden (Anthony, N.M.) 15-12 on Saturday. The score was the final lead change in a back-and-forth contest that featured three lead swaps.
After taking the lead on a touchdown pass by Lucero to
Johnnail Leonard, the Panthers went into halftime with a 9-7 lead. The Coyotes took the lead for good with a touchdown run by Lucero in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring zero points in the third, Roswell still trailed by 5 points going into the fourth quarter. But eight points in the fourth helped RHS pull out the victory.
Robert Hernandez played well for Gadsden. The senior wide receiver caught one touchdown.
The Coyotes' most effective player was Lucero. The senior quarterback threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored eight touchdowns on the season.
GHS's lone touchdown came on a 2-yard pass from
Aaron Gomez to Hernandez in the first quarter.
Roswell entered the contest giving up 27.0 points per game this year. RHS held firm on the defensive front, and kept the Anthony school well below the 25.8 points it had been averaging per game.
The Coyotes also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 34-13.
The loss comes after Gadsden defeated Chaparral 49-7 last week. With the win Roswell extended its winning streak to three games. The loss snapped the Panthers' 2-game winning streak.
In a 5A District 3 game next week Gadsden (3-3) takes on Mayfield, and Roswell (4-2) will go up against Moriarty in a non-conference game.
