Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2021 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Brandyn Durand of
Bishop Hendricken (Warwick) is the 2021 MaxPreps Rhode Island High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound multi-position star helped the Hawks go 7-2 and capture their fourth consecutive state championship.
Durand was the most valuable player in Hendricken's 49-40 win over rival La Salle Academy in the title game, putting things away with a 46-yard touchdown run off a direct snap in the final minutes.
In addition to being the team captain, Durand played defensive end, tight end and Wildcat quarterback. He helped Hendricken go 14-2 over his final two years in the program with a pair of state titles.
Durand signed with Kentucky to play baseball earlier this month. A catcher, he batted .463 with three home runs and 20 RBI in just 15 games as a junior. He was also a standout sprinter on Bishop Hendricken's track and field team, earning MVP honors at the state meet.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in early January.
