Morenci is 8-2 against Willcox since December of 2018, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Morenci Wildcats will head out on the road to square off against the Willcox Cowboys at 5:30 p.m. Hopefully Morenci focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Friday.
Last Friday, Morenci earned a 54-44 victory over Tombstone. The victory was just what Morenci needed coming off of a 69-25 loss in their prior contest.
Morenci can attribute much of their success to Elena Leonard, who scored 26 points along with seven steals. Leonard has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last 15 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Rozlyn Funari, who scored ten points along with six rebounds and six steals.
Meanwhile, Willcox can now show off six landslide victories after their most recent contest on Thursday. They really took it to Santa Rita for the full four quarters, racking up a 57-19 win on the road. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win Willcox has posted yet this season.
The win got Morenci back to even at 9-9. As for Willcox, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 8-11.
Morenci didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Willcox in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, but they still walked away with a 50-45 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Morenci since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
