The Wake Forest Cougars waltzed into Friday's match with two straight wins but they left with three. They walked away with a 41-32 victory over Broughton. Given Wake Forest's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 33rd, while Broughton is ranked 396th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Wake Forest can attribute much of their success to Audra Hillman, who scored 13 points along with 9 rebounds and 5 assists. The match was Hillman's third in a row with at least ten points. Jordyn Williams was another key contributor, scoring 6 points along with 14 rebounds.
Despite the defeat, Broughton saw an underclassman step up: Jane Kern scored 17 points along with 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Kern scored a full 53.1% of Broughton's points, the second time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Kalajah Wright, who scored 7 points along with 8 steals and 7 rebounds.
Wake Forest's victory bumped their record up to 3-0. As for Broughton, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-5.
Wake Forest will be playing at home against Corinth Holders at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Corinth Holders focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Friday. As for Broughton, they will head out on the road to face off against Millbrook at 6:15 p.m. on Friday.
