Even though the Memphis Cyclones scored an imposing 55 points on Tuesday, the Wheeler Mustangs still came out on top. Wheeler enjoyed a cozy 69-55 win over Memphis. Given Wheeler's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 546th, while Memphis is ranked 1289th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Wheeler to victory were Austin Adkins and Levi Ashurst. Adkins scored 25 points along with five rebounds and three steals, while Ashurst scored 20 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Adkins has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Marshall Mcneil, who scored four points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Memphis' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Abel Villa, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Villa has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last seven times he's played. Another player making a difference was Ryder Robison, who scored 14 points.
Wheeler has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games, which somehow isn't as good as their 16-5 record this season. As for Memphis, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-11.
Wheeler will be playing in front of their home fans against Quanah at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Memphis, they will head out on the road to take on Shamrock at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Shamrock comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 25 points in their last three games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
