Basketball Recap: Elkhorn South Takes a Loss

Elkhorn South lost against Westview back in December of 2024, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Elkhorn South Storm took an 80-69 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Westview Wolverines. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Thursday (60), the Storm still had to take the loss.

Loss or not, Elkhorn South got some senior leadership from Cooper Mroczek and Lincoln Schwarz. Mroczek dropped a double-double with 37 points and 11 rebounds, while Schwarz almost dropped a double-double with 16 points and nine boards. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Mroczek has scored all season. Jered Burke also deserves some recognition as he posted his first assist of the season.

Westview's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Amir Martin, who went 9-for-14 to rack up 25 points. Those 25 points gave Martin a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Tayvin Zephier-Murphy, who went 5-for-11 on his way to 15 points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Elkhorn South has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches, which has put a noticeable dent in their 6-14 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.8 points over those games. As for Westview, their victory was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 20-2.

Coming up, Elkhorn South will be playing at home against Grand Island at 7:15 p.m. on February 21st. As for Westview, they will venture away from home to take on Kearney at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Kearney's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
